Oudtshoorn Polish Heritage Trail
Oudtshoorn Polish Heritage Trail
Overview
In 1943, Oudtshoorn became a place of refuge, healing, and new beginnings for more than 500 Polish children and their caretakers, fleeing the devastation of World War II. Welcomed with warmth by the local community, the group found a temporary home in the Infantry School, which was converted into a safe settlement where the children could live, learn, and rebuild their sense of security. This period remains one of the most heartfelt chapters in Oudtshoorn’s multicultural history.
Their spiritual life centred around St Saviour’s Cathedral, where the presence of the Black Madonna—a revered symbol of protection and hope in Polish culture—offered comfort to both children and adults. Worship gatherings at the Cathedral became moments of unity, remembrance, and emotional strength.
Daily life often included walks across the historic Suspension Bridge, a structure that became both a physical and symbolic crossing for the children—from trauma toward stability. The bridge remains a reminder of their resilience and their connection to the town.
A deeply emotional landmark associated with this chapter is the Old Cemetery, where three children and one caretaker who passed away during their stay in Oudtshoorn are buried. Their graves stand as a solemn tribute to the hardships the group endured and the community that supported them.
Today, one of the most significant memorials to their stay is located at the CP Nel Museum. A specially erected monument lists the names of the children and caretakers, honouring their journey and preserving their story for future generations. It is a powerful reminder of South Africa’s role in offering refuge during a time of global crisis.
Despite the painful memories carried with them, the Polish children also experienced moments of joy in their new environment. Outings to Rus en Vrede Waterfall provided fresh air, natural beauty, and playful escapes from their difficult past. These excursions helped restore a sense of childhood, laughter, and freedom.
Together, these sites form the Polish Heritage Route of Oudtshoorn—an enduring connection between Poland and South Africa, built on compassion, resilience, and shared humanity.
